Frequently Asked Questions

GUITAR LESSONS

Do online classes work?

Absolutely! Online classes are great because you and I get to learn/work in an environment where we both feel very comfortable. Timings become flexible and convenient, allowing you to access learning materials and participate in classes from anywhere with an internet connection.

I’ve spent the last few years setting up my online learning curriculum. The body of digital content is easily accessible to all my students and this means that your learning material is available to you, 24/7.

Whether you are an absolute beginner or someone with a bit of experience, I’m confident that we can have productive online lessons together and I look forward to working with you!

Do you do in-person classes?

Although I prefer online lessons for it’s ease and convenience, I’m always open to in-person lessons if you live close by and are able to make it. I live in Brampton, Ontario so if you are close by, feel free to get in touch and we can make arrangements for in-person lessons.

How does an average lesson go?

An average lesson begins with us reviewing what we had worked on in the previous session. We then check your progress on the various topics of discussion and then proceed to further develop the skills which you wanted to enhance.

Once we are done with the topics for the day and if we have some time left, I usually proceed to discuss what music you are currently listening to and if there was a particular song which you were keen on learning. Depending on the difficulty of the song and your current level, we would then decide how best to proceed with learning the song or if we may need to hold off for a few more sessions before I feel you are ready to tackle the song.

The lessons usually end with us deciding on your practice plan for the week and then we wrap up!

What guitar should I buy?

I strongly encourage you to explore my BLOG where I’ve written full articles dedicated to this question!

How long does it take to get good at the guitar?

An excellent question. The honest answer is that nobody knows. If anyone gives you a fixed number, it’s a false promise! (In my opinion). However, I would like to elaborate my views on this.

I have seen students make tremendous progress in as little as 6 months and I have seen students stagnate for years. It all depends on you. I strongly believe that anyone can get good at the guitar if they practice daily and follow a structured approach to developing the right technique. I’d even go as far as to say, it’s impossible for you to not improve if you do your work daily.

That being said, anyone who is passionate about learning the guitar should not be focussed on how long it will take. Music is a lifelong journey and even the greatest guitarists of our generation are still learning. My whole philosophy is to help you become a musician who is competent at using the guitar as your tool to express yourself. This means that the journey can become enjoyable at any stage if you choose to see it that way and then you stop thinking about how long more you will need to learn and start thinking about what our next topic of exploration can be!

Rest assured, I have no intention of stringing you along as a student for the next decade! Everything we work on is based around core musical concepts and technique, I aim to empower you with both these skills as fast as you are capable of receiving it and once you understand it, there is no reason why you will not be able to continue your musical journey without me!

How does the free trial lesson work?

I enjoy the free trial session as it’s an opportunity for both of us to get to know each other. I have a checklist of questions that I like to ask just so that I can gauge what level you’re currently at and what your expectations are. I then proceed to explain my teaching method and how I aim to get you to where you want to reach. We then have an open discussion where you can ask me anything you’d like to clarify and once we’re done, you’d be all set to book your next lesson with me so that we can get to work!

RECORDING SESSIONS

How does a session work?

If you need some guitars on a track (acoustic or electric), just get in touch with me and let me know what the song is about. If you can send me a sample file, better! I’d then listen to track and have a discussion with you on your requirements. If we are on the same page then I usually request for the audio stems (if they are available) and I begin working on the track.

Once I’m done, I usually send you an mp3 with my work and if you’re satisfied, I clean up the tracks and send you the individual wav files. If refinements need to be made, I get them done and send you the files.

What’s your availability?

Thanks to the internet, I am pretty much available anytime I’m not sleeping or working. I try my best complete all recording sessions within 3-5 days (if it’s a single song) but if you need it quicker and I’m free, I will try my best to get it done.

What are your styles?

If you go through the audio files I’ve listed on my homepage, you’ll get a clear idea about my playing style and the kind of music I usually play on. That being said, I’ve always aimed to be as versatile as I can. I enjoy challenges as it takes me out of my comfort zone and allows me to attempt new styles which inevitably enhances my guitar vocabulary. If you need me to play something specific, we can always have a chat about it and see if there’s any way I can make it happen for you!

Are you open to collaborations?

Yes! If it is a project that excites me, I’m always game. Feel free to get in touch and we can discuss all possibilities.

OTHER QUESTIONS

Do you play other instruments?

Guitar has always been my primary instrument. However, I’m capable of handling other instruments as well. Funnily enough, I’m most passionate about learning the drums and it’s my dream to one day be considered a professional drummer as well.

In a pinch, I can hold some chords for you on a keyboard but I will not insult other pianists by claiming to be a competent one. Apart from this, I have tried my hand at the harmonica and can give you a couple of grooves on a shaker.

Lastly, I don’t think I have a good singing voice but I do understand harmony and can always use my voice to explain any ideas I have to vocalists.

Do you write music?

It is a dream of mine. I used to write music when I was part of my college band, 83MPH. Nowadays, I am searching for the right inspiration to get started. I have countless ideas in my head but I’ve placed them on the backburner for now. I tend to switch my brain ON whenever I get a recording session and then switch it back OFF once I’m done! 🙂
